Selyf’s name is an old elven word for ‘peace’. It was the only name they had for a very long time, only being afforded a first name. They were born to an elven slave in the high Tevinter houses, being left as a foundling before being adopted in to a military family.

This family made them Selyf Mercar once adopted.

Selyf’s adopted mother is the Shadow Dragons’ premiere battle-mage, they learnt their connection to the Fade and magic from a young age from her.

Freakishly tall because I think it’s funny they tower over most people and come off as unnerving. Body build: Athletic, but not muscular.

Due to being a mage, they are often on the backlines of a fight meaning they have never needed great overall strength. However, they are slim and fast like a runner after years of wriggling in to places they should not be as part of the Shadow Dragons.
Eyes: Downturned with drooping heavy white lashes. Naturally blood red irises - believed to be discoloured.
Hair: Grown past the shoulders in loose layered waves in a bright white shade.

Selyf’s hair is usually cut by themself so sometimes appears choppy.

They often try to tie their hair back quite often to keep it out of the way in battle, but because of their own failures in cutting it properly they usually just give up.
Skin tone: Porcelain pale.

Practically translucent with the vaguest hint of peach colour.
Do they tan or freckle? They don’t, they burn quite easily in the sun due to the fairness of their skin and hair.
Any distinctive physical characteristics? A set of chevron shaped scars descending down their forehead to the bridge of their nose.

Selyf rarely speaks of where the scars come from as they have had them since being a young foundling. Some theorise their biological mother gave them these marks before leaving them as to make her child unlikely to be sold as a slave due to being ‘damaged goods’ in a difficult to hide place.
They have a piercing on their right ear, wearing a small gold serpent-like dragon earring.

The earring was a gift from their adoptive mother to feel closer despite the distance often between them due to Shadow Dragon operations.

Selyf is a realist when it comes to situations such as jobs to tackle and how they must be carried out.

However, in contact with people and the more connective side of life, they are a pessimist through and through. They do not believe in the good intentions of people in the slightest.

Selyf is a deeply and naturally lonely person, due to things out of their control but also due to their own actions. They are an elf who has never known their culture or true family that has never known gentleness, so they are deeply alone in that sense of ostracization.

Furthermore, Selyf often isolates themself. They have seen the worst of humanity, seen the cruelty and betrayal of people so finds it difficult to trust anyone - they push those away to save themself the disappointment of closeness. They long in some way for people in that deeply natural way, but also bares their teeth if anyone gets too close. Very much like a feral cat freezing under a petting hand before lashing out.

They hold some awareness of their loneliness and isolation, yet will ever address it. To be alone is to be strong. In the underworld of Teviter where the only person who has your back is yourself, Selyf views being alone as a show of strength - instilled perhaps on accident by Allora in her own beliefs despite trying to teach differently.

Allora trying to explain that there is strength in numbers while refusing to bend to that idea established Selyf’s lone wolf nature.

Selyf has never known their biological family due to being left at a young age. They wonder sometimes what their family may be like, knowing they were enslaved elves in high Tevinter. At times they consider searching for their family as part of their journey to liberate many in Tevinter, but they have not had much luck.
Adoptive mother - Allora Mercar.

Allora is a battle-mage, part of the Shadow Dragons after leaving the Tevinter military after disagreeing with their actions for a long time. She is a human woman who adopted Selyf when they were a baby after they were left to the Shadow Dragons.

Allora is a very tough and hardened woman, being the one who instilled Selyf with their stoic nature. She also gave them their interest and love of magic, wanting to know how to harness the Fade to protect them. Allora is deeply protective of her child even though at times she does not see them for a long while due to being sent out for missions by the Shadow Dragons.

Their relationship is strong, but if not a bit unconventional. Allora loves Selyf but does not show it in the typical motherly love fashion, more-so in the desire to toughen them up so the world may never hurt them. Unofficial father figure - Varric Tethras.

Selyf has never had a constant father figure in their life due to Allora never seeking romance. When they were enlisted by Varric to track down Solas, the kind of innate action of Varric being a mentor meant that Selyf began to reluctantly view the dwarf as a father figure. Especially when going through the motions of realising their gender identity, his support aided them greatly so Selyf regards Varric as family.

In a way, Selyf knew that the Varric at the Lighthouse was nothing more than an illusion to placate them. But the sheer refusal to see the man as anything else than actually Varric lead to the delusion. That small comfort being ripped away devastated Selyf.
